Getting Started: The Onboarding Questionnaire

What the onboarding questionnaire does, why we ask for age, and how to change your starting lesson level.

Written by Julia

Right after you sign up for Skoove, we ask a short series of questions about your piano experience, goals, and how often you plan to practice. This is the onboarding questionnaire, and it's only job is to help us recommend a good starting lesson for you. Here's what to know about it.

What does the onboarding questionnaire actually do?

It picks a starting lesson that matches your current piano skill level and goals. That's it. It doesn't unlock, lock, or limit anything else in the app; every course, lesson, and song stays available to you no matter how you answer.

What questions will I be asked?

You'll be asked who's learning, your age range, your piano experience level (from complete beginner to advanced), your learning goals, how often you plan to practice, and which song you'd like to start with. If a younger age is selected, we'll also check whether a grown-up is nearby to help with setup.

I picked the wrong experience level. How do I fix it?

Just back out of your starting lesson and open the Courses tab, then choose whichever level fits you better. You can switch as many times as you like; there's no need to redo the questionnaire.

Can I go through the questionnaire again from the start?

The questionnaire only runs once, right after sign-up, so there's no menu option to bring it back. If you'd like to see it again in full, you can delete the Skoove app and reinstall it, then log back into your account. Note that this restarts the onboarding flow itself, it won't affect your existing course access.

Do I have to answer every question?

There's no way to skip the questionnaire altogether, but it only takes about a minute, and several questions include a non-committal option ("Not sure yet", "I don't know yet", "No preference") if you'd rather not pick something specific. The age question also has a "Skip the question" option.

Why do you ask for my age, and why does it sometimes ask if a grown-up is around?

The age range helps us set the right tone and pacing, for example, a lighter, more encouraging style for younger learners. If a young age is selected, we also check that a grown-up is nearby so an adult can help with setup and stay aware of what's happening in the app. Neither answer affects what content is available.

Does the song I choose at the end limit what I can play later?

No. The song you choose (or "No preference" if you'd rather not pick one) just gets you playing something right away. The full song library is available to you afterwards regardless of what you chose here.

I answered "me and a family member" (or "a family member") to the first question. Does that set up a separate profile for them?

Not currently. That question just changes the tone of a couple of onboarding screens, for example, showing kid-friendly messaging. Skoove tracks one shared course history per account, so everyone using the account currently sees the same progress and starting point rather than having individual profiles.

The questionnaire won't load or move to the next question. What should I do?

Try fully closing and reopening the app, checking for an app update in the App Store/Play Store, and making sure you have a stable internet connection (your answers need to sync as you go). If it's still stuck, contact support with your device model, app version, and any error message you see.
